DIY Pallet Trellis

Whether you’re at home, at school, or at work, this upcycled solution can help grow vertical crops like pumpkins while giving new life to discarded materials.

Why This Plan Works

DIY Pallet Trellis

  • Affordable and accessible: Uses materials commonly found or already on hand.
  • Environmentally friendly: Encourages upcycling and reduces waste.
  • Customizable: Adaptable to various garden layouts and needs.
  • Practical and decorative: Hides unsightly areas while supporting plant growth.
  • Durable: Trellises have held up well over time, even in outdoor conditions.

What You Will Need

  • Wooden pallets
  • Paint (any type, craft paint works well)
  • Twine or rope
  • L-brackets (optional)
  • Tools: hammer, drill, staple gun (all optional, depending on setup)

Step 1: Gather and Inspect Your Pallets

Gather and Inspect Your Pallets

Begin by collecting your pallets. If you’re fortunate like we are, you may have access to a steady supply of pallets in good condition. Inspect each pallet carefully. Remove any stray nails or sharp objects to ensure safety during handling and setup.

Step 2: Prep the Pallets

Prep the Pallets

Clean the pallets by removing any unwanted plant debris or damaged wood. In one case, we stripped the entire pallet except for the top and bottom planks to create an open frame. This prep stage is essential for customizing your trellises to suit your space and aesthetic.

Step 3: Paint the Pallets

Painting is optional but adds a personal touch and helps preserve the wood. We utilized inexpensive craft paints—those small $0.50 bottles worked perfectly. Use any color scheme that fits your garden theme. Once painted, allow the pallets to dry completely before moving to the next step.

Step 4: Add Twine for Climbing Plants

Add Twine for Climbing Plants

For a functional twist, remove most of the inner planks and wrap twine or rope around the inside of the pallet frame. Secure the twine with staples or nails. This creates a support structure for climbing plants such as pumpkins, beans, or cucumbers.

Step 5: Install the Pallet Trellises

There are multiple ways to set up the trellises:

  • Ground installation: Dig small holes, place the pallets upright, fill the holes back in with soil, and stabilize with bricks or large rocks.
  • Bracket installation: Attach the pallets securely using L-brackets to nearby structures or stakes for added stability.

Note – All setups so far have remained stable, with no issues of collapsing or wear—even the paint has endured the elements remarkably well.

Other Details Display

  • Materials used: Primarily recycled pallets, craft paint, garden twine, and basic tools.
  • Project setting: School garden, but adaptable for home gardens or community spaces.
  • Main goal: Functional trellis support for pumpkins and visual improvement of the garden area.
  • Stability measures: Use of rocks, bricks, or L-brackets for reinforcement.
  • Design feature: Twine-wrapped inner frame to support climbing plants.
  • Visual appeal: Painted pallets to enhance garden aesthetics.
