How to Make a DIY Bird Bath
Step 1: Find Your Main Component
Start by selecting a unique item for your base. It could be a flower pot or something unconventional like we used—an old washing machine spinner. Ensure it’s sturdy, waterproof, and has a flat area to support the bird bath bowl.
Step 2: Clean All Parts
Wipe down all items to remove dust and debris. Clean surfaces help the adhesive bond properly and ensure a long-lasting hold.
Step 3: Dry Fit Before Gluing
Assemble all the parts without glue first to visualize the final design. You may discover that flipping certain components or adding extra decorative items—like our artichoke candle holder—enhances the look.
Step 4: Glue Hardest-to-Bond Parts First
Load your adhesive into the caulking gun and cut open the seal. Carefully trace the shape of the base (e.g., spinner) onto the patio block with chalk. Apply a bead of adhesive along the traced area and press the base firmly onto the patio block.
Step 5: Attach the Base to the Footing
Place the spinner or base item onto the adhesive-covered patio block. Press down with even pressure to ensure strong adhesion. This step sets the foundation, so take your time.
Step 6: Add the Bird Bath Dish
Dry fit the bath dish onto the base. Apply adhesive to the easiest surface (in our case, the top of the base). Carefully center the water dish and press down gently but firmly. Avoid moving the pieces while the glue cures, which typically takes several hours.
Step 7: Add a Perch for the Birds
Enhance the bath with a landing spot. We used a small terra cotta saucer, flipped for better adhesion. You could also use a flat rock or another decorative item. For flair, we added an artichoke candle holder—flipped upside down to resemble a mini bath inside the larger dish.
Step 8: Secure the Top Perch
Mark the center of the bath dish with chalk if needed. Apply adhesive to the base of your perch (e.g., terra cotta saucer or candle holder) and press it into place. Rotate slightly to spread the adhesive evenly. Some excess glue may squeeze out—clean up after it dries.
Step 9: Let Everything Dry
Place your bird bath in a safe, undisturbed area for drying. We put ours on the porch to admire it. Patience is key here—allow full curing time for durability.
Step 10: Choose a Bird-Friendly Location
Once dry, position your bird bath where birds feel safe—near bushes or trees. Keep it filled with clean water and rinse it regularly. Then sit back, watch, and wait for the feathered visitors to arrive!
Note: Adhesive is sticky and requires hours to cure. Avoid repositioning parts once they’re set.
